My Teaching Philosophy - The Socratic Method By:Dr. Mario Barrett, Ph.D.
The students of today will be the leaders of tomorrow, which is why it is so important that they develop the critical thinking necessary for arriving at multiple answers/solutions for the complex problems, challenges, or situations that are facing our ever-changing world. This can only occur if they embrace the notion that living in the inquiry is not only okay, but is the only way they can keep continuously coming up with new ideas and innovations to address real world issues.
A college education can do much more than provide a stable lifestyle. It can expand an individual's thinking, which can expand that individual's worldview. Armed with an expanded worldview, that individual can have a positive influence on the lives of those that he/she meets. In my classroom, students quickly learn that I am not impressed with hearing them simply recite what they read or what was taught to them. They realize that I want and expect a deeper level of critical thinking and open discussion, where new ideas emerge. By holding students to this standard, they come to realize that they are getting much more out of the class than what they signed up for, and that getting a college education is more than simply getting a college degree.
I use the Socratic Method so that I can develop their minds by encouraging their natural curiosity. Once that curiosity and inquisitive nature is unleashing, it is almost impossible to bottle them back up, making my students willing and able to go out into the world and address the complex challenges of the ever-changing world. My students are prepared to do more than just get a good job, as they can ask thought provoking questions, think critically, seek out multiple answers/solutions for the same issue, respectfully debate the validity of their arguments, and be open enough to listen to the views and ideas of others. My students are prepared to be leaders.

How do I think
Learning to Think - Part Two - Mindfulness Throughout the Day By:Courtney Kowalczyk School has been in session for over a month now, and students are busily working on their studies. Teachers have dug into the content of their curriculum for the year, and everyone has had time to adjust to the new routine. As a former teacher, curriculum was an integral part of my day; and working with students with special needs could be very challenging, especially when trying to pull from so many different pieces of curriculum. I did my best to look at each child's unique needs, and best match their capabilities with the curriculum options I had available; however, I still found myself struggling with what I had. My students needed extra practice and a slower pace, which most curricula today do not allow. I also wanted to see my students learning to think and process information instead of learning static skills.
Allow your students to get the materials they need instead of doing it for them. For many teachers, it is easier to get the materials that we need before inviting our students to join us. However, asking our students to get the materials themselves gets them thinking ahead to what it is that you will be doing, and to prepare for the activity themselves. This allows for a great deal of thinking on the student's part, which is very important. You are not only teaching them how to think but also how to plan, which is a necessary life skill that every child should have. Include a "Surprise Bag" in your daily routines. I have used a "Surprise Bag" for many years now, and all of my students have enjoyed it. When undertaking this activity, you need to have a fabric bag that closes and that cannot be seen through. Each day, pick a student to help you put into the surprise bag something that no one else knows about.

Can You Survive on a Teacher's Salary?
By:Adam Waxler Is it possible to teach these days and still support a family? Unfortunately, the answer is no. These days, especially with the economy the way it is, it is nearly impossible to survive on a teacher's salary. The cost of everything has gone up (gas, groceries, taxes etc.), yet teacher salaries have not nearly kept up the same pace. In fact, many school districts around the country are either freezing teacher salaries or even cutting teacher salaries. Sure, if you live on your own and have no kids then yes, maybe, you can survive on a teacher's salary. However, if you have a family then either you or your spouse has to work a second job.
Most every teacher I know works more than one job. Some teachers work nights in restaurants, some teachers work weekends landscaping, some have started their own online business (like myself), but the most common, and possibly the easiest way for teachers to earn extra money, is by tutoring. Tutoring is great way for teachers to earn extra money. Most tutors simply put an add in their local paper or advertise at their local school and then go to their client's house or have their client come to their home. However, these days, with all the technology available, online tutoring jobs have become quite popular. Online tutoring jobs open up many more possibilities for both the student and the tutor. Online tutoring jobs provide tutors much more flexibility about when and where they can work. The best part is, by using today's technology, online tutors can really motivate and inspire their students to learn. Not only that, but online tutors have a much greater reach than their local area and therefore can turn their tutoring business from earning a little extra cash into a real income producer. In the end, online tutoring is a win-win-win situation. Everyone benefits...the parents, the tutor, and most importantly, the student. Is Your Teacher Salary Too Low? Try Online Tutoring Jobs!

Ways to Improve Reading - Tips For Faster and Better Reading Skills By:Wendy Pan
1. Learn more about the world around you. By broadening the readers' knowledge base through reading a variety of source materials the reader can have a stronger knowledge base. With this knowledge base at their disposal the reader can retain and absorb more information while reading, making it easier to improve reading and retention.
2. Pay attention to what you are reading. Readers monitor their attention to the prose, concentration as well as effectiveness. Paying attention to this will help the reader recognize if they have skipped over an idea, important information and such. Once the reader learns to pay focus on the prose, they are able to backup and go back over the information to help retain it better, which helps improve reading.
3. Work on learning more vocabulary. On average, a person might know 25,000 words and a college graduate maybe 35,000 words. By reading more and using a dictionary to look up words that the reader does not know this will improve reading even more. This helps the reader be able to read more and retain more information.
4. The more one person reads, the easier it will become to improve the skill of reading. After reading more often, the reader will become more familiar with structures of the English language in the use of writing. This will help provide a framework for the reader to understand more of the prose along with understanding the piece with greater ease.
5. Do not be afraid to ask questions. If the reader is a child or in school, it is easier to ask classmates or teachers about information provided in the prose. Once the reader is an adult or way from school, this seems to be more challenging. There are ways online or through Google to ask questions about the piece that the reader is going over and ask the questions about it to help them improve reading even more.
6. Reading a piece of literature or novel once is rarely if ever enough for someone to comprehend it completely. Rereading a book will help develop a richer understanding of the piece and help summarize the important facts within the piece. Rereading also makes sure that the reader has already read the piece and the second time through allows the reader more time to evaluate the prose, learn more details about the work and grasp more of the information.
